Yes, student athletes face the same developmental tasks and life stressors as non athletes. What is unique about student athletes is that they face stressors and expectations unlike any other that could either trigger mental health symptoms or intensify an existing mental health issue.
Common stressors that student athletes face include: time demands working developing their talent, lack of time to engage in other extracurricular activities, sleep deprivation, pressure to perform, injuries, transitioning from high school to college, seeing oneself as only an athlete.
My mission is to assist in breaking the mental health stigma within the sports culture by raising awareness for the needs of student athletes through counseling and education.
